If you’ve been visiting The Postrider for a while, you’ve probably noticed a slight change in the banner across the site. We used to list individual vertices for Politics, Music, Movies & TV, Culture, and occasionally a few other things. But after thinking about the future of the site and how best to present and organize our content, we realized we never describe The Postrider as covering “politics, music, movies and TV, and also some other stuff” – instead, we describe it as a site that covers “politics and culture.” And, over the course of the last five years, we’ve found that this is really what drives our best content: to write about pop culture and politics in an insightful way that brings the discourse down to earth.

It’s also been the longstanding truth of The Postrider that our passion for both politics and pop culture are a reflection of our founding partnership: between me and our Politics Editor, Lars. By creating two hemispheres of our content and focus, we’re not seeking to bifurcate the site, but rather do what we do best: rely on our own backgrounds and our professional relationship to synthesize some old ideas in a novel way. In an era where politics and pop culture are increasingly interconnected and the lines between government and entertainment are blurred, we’re choosing to reframe the site around both concepts because they complement each other. Some of our highest quality content, from our Watching Mates podcast, an analysis of the pervasive presence of Richard Nixon in our culture, a review of the way politics seeped into Durand Jones’ concert, and reflections on Ted Lasso and American soft power, demonstrate this.

So, to reflect that reality, we’ve combined the Music and Movies & TV verticals into one big Culture vertical, headed by yours truly, where you’ll also be able to find the occasional sports article and pieces about other topics that fit under the Culture umbrella. As culture coverage from both established entertainment outlets and social media reliant start ups has become increasingly effusive and deferential, The Postrider has maintained a fair but critical voice. We’ve created a vertical where there’s enough space to both dive into the ethical quandaries of true crime documentaries and gush about a comedy like The Other Two. We’re fans of music, film, and TV, sure, but we believe that fandom comes with a responsibility to be honest when things don’t live up to our expectations, and praise them when they do.

Outside of that, not a whole lot is going to be changing at The Postrider. We’re still committed to delivering you the most thoughtful content possible, about everything from the upcoming 2024 elections to the ongoing struggles of DC’s film arm to whatever band I happen to see in a given week.
