Last week the off-beat, on-beat wordsmith Bruiser Wolf from Detroit, Michigan released a project with Harry Fraud called Made by Dope. While Bruiser has been in the underground rap scene for quite some time, he made some of his first appearances with Danny Brown under the Bruiser Brigade collective, which included other rappers such as Fat Ray. But this past year Bruiser has taken his unorthodox flow and set a course for himself and his career that has allowed him to stand on his own and deliver some of the wittiest and most enlightening rap lyrics of the year. Below I’ve outlined my favorite 10 verses from his latest release Made By Dope.  Some of these hit you in the head like a wrench thrown from the second floor while others slide under the radar like a frogman descending into enemy territory from the beach. Check these lyrics out below.

  • “But when you’re making bands this big, it’s an orchestra” (“Tubi”)
  • “Ask direct question, they start deflecting”/”But I peeked though and shrugged my shoulders like Durant” (“Tubi”)
  • “To be Jordan, you gotta be from a different Creed” (“Raised By Dope”)
  • “I bent the rules until they fit me” (“Against the Odds”)
  • “They put your team in cuffs, and you sang lead like David Ruffin” (“Eye Owe You”)
  • “ “Dump a body in the ocean”/”Now the tide crimson” (“The Money Say” feat. Mick Jenkins)
  • “I was sleepin’ with cougars when Freddy was in y’all dreams” (“Layup Lines”)
  •  “Carats on the ring, we call it finger food” (“Boss Up”)
  • “If money the root of evil, what’s the square root?” (“Boss Up”)
  • “Chevrolet boxed up, like it’s a to go plate” (“Heart Broke”)

I hope the whimsy and sometime menace of Bruiser Wolf’s lyrics play on an infinite loop in your head like it does for me during the week. Checkout his album, Made by Dope.
