Natalie James v. John Boozman

Safe Republican

Last cycle, we profiled the Arkansas Senate race between Republican incumbent Tom Cotton and Libertarian candidate Ricky Harrington Jr. – a blowout in favor of Cotton thanks to the fact the Democratic nominee, John Mahony, dropped out after the filing deadline and could not be replaced. This round, the senior senator from Arkansas, John Boozman, will likely survive a challenge from community advocate and Democrat Natalie James. Though James’ insistence that she refuses “to believe that Arkansas isn’t worth fighting for” and “believe that we ought to sit on the sidelines and wait for another political cycle” is admirable and the noncompetitiveness of so many statewide and congressional elections in our day and age is lamentable, prospects are pretty bleak for Democrats in the state that once brought them Bill Clinton.

So, Boozman can look forward to another term. First elected in 2010 when he defeated Democratic incumbent Blanche Lincoln, Boozman was the first Republican elected to his seat since Reconstruction. As the current ranking member on the Senate Agriculture Committee, he’d be poised to take up that chairmanship too should Republicans take the chamber. That doesn’t mean he’ll get a lot of attention in the next Congress, but this stalwart Trump supporter and anti-choice Republican will surely be there, whether the GOP wins control of the Senate or not.
