Madison Horn v. James Lankford

Safe Republican

In many other states, an incumbent senator being adjacent to a major (if undercovered) sexual abuse scandal and testifying that you believe 13 year-olds can consent to sex would at least inject some uncertainty into the race, but not so in Oklahoma, where James Lankford is the clear favorite to win reelection. Lankford, who criticized Donald Trump’s 2020 photo op in front of the St. John’s Episcopal Church and initially pushed to get Joe Biden security briefings before GSA began the transfer process (he later backtracked and voted not to certify the 2020 election), was actually challenged in the Republican primary by Pastor Jackson Lahmeyer, who received endorsements from Trump allies like Michael Flynn, Sebastian Gorka, and Rudy Giuliani (Trump, uncharacteristically, did not endorse in this race). Lankford, an otherwise staunch conservative, easily dispatched of Lahmeyer, avoiding a runoff by winning 68% of the primary vote.

The Democratic nominee, on the other hand, was determined via runoff, which cybersecurity professional Madison Horn (no relation to former Congresswoman Kendra Horn, the Democrat running in Oklhoma’s special election) won with 65.5% of the vote. True to her profession, Horn is emphasizing technology in her platform, including investments in “cloud computing and blockchain technology,” but is otherwise running as a straightforward liberal. And why not – even if Horn took Joe Manchin-esque positions, it probably wouldn’t do her any good. Oklahoma hasn’t elected a Democratic senator since 1990, and there’s little reason to believe that’ll change in 2022.
